sequoia trees have long memories
they store up in their rings all
that has happened before them for centuries
chinese vikings columbus
        spanish conquistadors monks
                       westward moving pioneers
and in their pulpy flesh is registered all
that has passed before them and still the only
sound they make is swishing in their leaves
and branches creaking    and cones crackling
open to spread new seeds
