A Taoist Trump

Whenever there is war, both sides are wrong,
No matter if they each defend the right.
The side that yields will win with virtue's might,
Regardless of the prowess of its throngs.
The female overcomes the male erelong
With stillness, and true Liberty appears
When it is not asserted or made clear—
For opposition urges strife along.

Therefore when Empire covets all the earth,
It fails to compass mild humility,
And even its proud triumph has no worth
When weakness yields and brings it to its knees:
The conqueror is foiled without one blow.
Such victory as this, no soldier knows.
