Dark Root

No light without dark
No success without failure
No desire without disappointment
No prosperity without hunger

The new moon’s orbit, just as full
Must follow the law of gravity
Though it too feels the Earth’s heavy pull
It goes unseen and so becomes free

No kindness without contempt
No peace without war
No victory without defeat
No pride without a fall

Much less effort to start a fire
Than attempt to blot out the sun
Disappointment stems from desire
But darkness - the root - is one
