I wrote "A Poem for Buddha's Enlightenment Eve" after sitting an all night retreat on Buddha's enlightenment eve at my local Zen Center. Myself and three other individuals ended up sticking it out the whole night. The poem was written in thanks to the three individuals who sat so strongly with me.

A Poem for Buddha's Enlightenment Eve

Glowing orange warmth
Early morning's blanket
Waited the whole night
So that I might awake

All the while watching
a bearded man with lidless eyes
hanging from a bodhi tree
By his rotten teeth

foolishly I asked him
why am I sitting under the tree?
the sly fellow saved all beings
with a glance he killed the Buddha and I
