A spider clung to its web's intricate center
not shimmering in the least,
until a quake began and a wait concluded.
In nature's speed the spider
grasped the fighting frightened fastened fly
hesitating not an instant
in strengthening its seizing weave.
For life the fly flailed its wings to no avail;
at once the spider sank its fangs
to defy the fly, to poison it and deaden it.
And on and on the trying fly defied the spider's silk
to no avail.
When in defeat, quiet lie the fly,
the spider snipped some certain strands
and rolled the fly as on a spit
to seal the feast and let it die.
