well, we did
          play some good games
                                       of chess

batting the fleshy little pieces
back & forth
over a few lifetimes

before we got bored
with the same old story
[that fight for love & glory]

& black & white wars

& decided to use the cosmos
for a board, instead—

moving stars around
in the dark silences

as easily
as pawns.
