In A Zen Garden

—for my dear friend, Andrew

Earth revolves slowly/
      around to where it began/
goes on as before

                  *

there a sound breathes out/
      only swirl down garden paths/
like a butterfly

                  *

bell resounds in my/
head. . . reminds it is time to pray/
to the Universe

                  *

birds flap from laughter/
      to laughter. . . hear their chattering/
do they seem to sing?

                  *

stars blink on and off/
      hope belies their distances/
we shine as they shine

                  *

wind blows across plain/
see light shiver in setting sun/
yet night fills with stars

                  *

as dark will recede/
more of our selves reveals to sight/
there is day in light

                  *

flute winds through garden/
calling up all sound we forgot/
winds unwind to self

                  *

when no sound will do/
across gardens and plains flute plays/
heralds itself clear

                  *

plucking strings and breath/
as if wind has come into self/
plays in treetop leaves

                  *

what have i done with/
it all? and then i remember to look/
up to shining moon

                  *

another day comes/
flute hums as garden plant dew dries/
cat purrs by the gate
