THE UNMOVED MOVER

    If you loved me
    As I love you,
You wouldn't need to ask,
You wouldn't need to receive.
We wouldn't need to seek
The Unmoved Mover—
    If you loved me
    As I love you.

    If I loved you
    As you love me,
Our spirits would decay
In our bodies' dull tombs,
Hand in hand their shadows
Wandering in Hades—
    If I loved you
    As you love me.

    If you loved me
    As I love you,
No distance could part us,
No union join us,
For then we would be
Thought thinking Thought—
    If you loved me
    As I love you.

    If I loved you
    As you love me,
Our states would secede,
And plunge in civil war:
Emancipation Proclamations
Never could rejoin them—
    If I loved you
    As you love me.

    If you loved me
    As I love you,
We wouldn't need to touch,
We wouldn't need to speak
In that mystical dance
'Round the Unmoved Mover—
    If you loved me
    As I love you.
