sonnet: The Path

Sharply rings the calling bell, daybreak nears
Those of hood and robe join to contemplate
This life and next, and all the countless years
Man's best efforts, wasted and vain to date
Yet seek no change perchance to come their way
And gather to pronounce that all is well
Perfect your mind, slay illusion, all say
Just meditate and toil and mind the bell
Life is long, time is short, they ask not why
These seek the path, find wisdom, calm repose
The world's outside, but life's within's, no lie
Man part flesh, part spirit, which rules, God knows
As birds wing through the sky, so to these fly
To nourish that within, to which life flows...
