Burma October 2007—Again?

Hatred never ceases by hatred,
but by love alone
this is an ancient law.

               —Dhammapada 500 B.C.E.

Saffron Lotus floats gently
                                              I don't ask how,
on calm crimson waters,
                                              knowing so little,
of pond creatures
                                              only watched them
waiting to gorge
                                              this unexpected feast
under gently unblinking sky,
                                              saffron wave swells and breaks
black gun barrels spit
                                              a panicked harvest.
I wonder how
                                              they may lose their appetite
such fare as blood fattened fish
for others well fed and uniformed
is so sacred a sacrifice
